Bursting it out leaving a further analysis for a ater time, it looks like there are three main categories of futures that the life on Earth could spontaneously take, unless further conscious action is taken. The three main categories are:
- As resource availability becomes more and more scarce, the quality of life for all inhabitants for our planet degrades. For those better off this means having to contend with a lower quality of life, for those worse off this may mean quite impossible conditions. Infrastructure maintenance becomes harder and harder (Detroit), incomes go down, food becomes more costly and more labor-intensive to produce. The "extra weight" on societies such as Governments will need to cut back. People who are left with less sources for sustenance will start taking it from those who have more, need for security will go up while the provision of security as centralized service by the Government becomes ever harder. The probability of this scenario is highest looking at what is going on in the world currently.
- Military intervention to get rid of "excessive" competitors for the resources left on the Planet. The hope here is that whatever is left will help those still alive to continue living and consuming "uninterrupted", and to push the eventual meeting point with resource limits further into the future. As wars are extremely resource-intense, the eventual meeting point with resource limits for these still living will be much nearer than without incurring that waste. Although pretty much all countries are busy extending their military capabilities, this scenario is probably less likely than the first one as pretty much everyone understands that war is a waste of resources and wants to avoid that. Hopefully Iraq and Afganistan were good lessons towards learning this.
- There are still those hoping that nothing really needs to be done and that a solution to everything will somehow appear out of thin air when needed. This is, of course, a possibility as there always is a possibility to win a lottery. Whether it makes any sense to count on that or not is entirely another matter.
The above is a very quick listing of what looks probable. I must admit that none of them feels particularly appealing. More on all that later.
